Ocellated Bronze Skink
Chalcides ocellatus
The ocellated bronze skink lives around the Mediterranean and in parts of North Africa and western Asia. A smooth bronze-brown body with pale, dark-edged eye spots, short five-toed legs and a long tail suits its burrowing habits. It is maintained and bred in reptile collections.
Captive housing uses deep burrowing substrate, stones or cork retreats, warm and cool areas, drinking water and insect food. Females give birth to live young. It has four developed limbs, unlike the more reduced legs of several other Chalcides species.
