Northern River Terrapin
Batagur baska
The northern river terrapin is an egg-laying turtle of large South Asian rivers and estuaries, including the Sundarbans region. Adults have a broad smooth oval shell and strong swimming limbs; breeding males change head and neck color. Conservation and zoo collections maintain it. Housing needs substantial clean water, land and suitable nesting beaches under specialist management. It is listed under the US Endangered Species Act and in CITES Appendix I; Batagur affinis is a separate species.
