Northern Caiman Lizard
Dracaena guianensis
The northern caiman lizard inhabits tropical wetlands in northern South America. A reddish head, green body and two raised rows of back scales give it a crocodile-like appearance, though it is a teiid lizard. Strong jaws crush snails and other mollusks. It is kept and bred in zoos and specialist collections. Housing combines a substantial water area, sturdy climbing branches, sheltered land, basking heat and UVB. Females lay eggs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
