Northern Blunt-Spined Monitor
Varanus primordius
The northern blunt-spined monitor is a dwarf monitor from the northern part of Australia's Northern Territory. Its brown body and relatively weak, blunt tail spines distinguish it from the more strongly spined ridge-tailed monitors. It has a documented history of captive maintenance in specialist collections.
Captive thermal provision needs a basking area with cooler alternatives and access to humid retreats, allowing the animal to regulate temperature and water loss. Females lay eggs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
