The North Island brown kiwi, Apteryx mantelli, is a nocturnal flightless bird native to New Zealand's North Island. It has shaggy brown feathers, sturdy legs, a long bill with nostrils near the tip, and a strong sense of smell used to probe soil and leaf litter for invertebrates. Like other kiwi, it lays an unusually large egg for its body size, and its secretive habits make it easier to hear at night than to see in dense habitat.

Care and management center on conservation rather than private keeping. Wildlife teams use predator control, fenced sanctuaries, egg collection, chick rearing, radio tracking, and release programs to improve survival where stoats, dogs, cats, and habitat loss are concerns. Captive and translocation records matter because local lineages and release sites are managed carefully. Handling is specialized work for permitted staff, with emphasis on quiet restraint, disease prevention, and returning birds to safe nocturnal territories.
