North American Wood Turtle
Glyptemys insculpta
The North American wood turtle is an egg-laying turtle from northeastern North America that uses streams and surrounding terrestrial habitats. Its brown shell has sculptured scutes with raised growth rings, and orange to reddish skin shows around the limbs and neck. Zoo and conservation collections maintain it. Housing needs both clean water and extensive sheltered land, basking and nesting space, with a temperate climate. Wildlife possession rules vary across its range.
