North African Mastigure
Uromastyx acanthinura
The North African mastigure inhabits arid rocky landscapes in North Africa, including Algeria and Tunisia. Its broad body and strongly spined tail are adapted to life around burrows and rock shelters, with adult coloration varying between individuals. It is kept and bred in specialist desert-lizard collections.
Housing provides bright lighting, UVB, a hot basking area, cooler shade and secure shelters, with a largely plant-based diet and nesting substrate. Females lay eggs. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
