Unknown Strain
An unknown-strain Nile tilapia is a Nile tilapia whose strain, hatchery line, or breeding background is not known to the keeper or seller. It may still be a true Oreochromis niloticus, but without documentation it cannot be confidently linked to a specific improved, wild, red, or hybrid-influenced line. Color alone is not reliable: gray, black, gold, orange, mottled, albino, or piebald fish can appear in multiple farm stocks.
Treat unknown-strain fish as general production Nile tilapia when planning systems or stocking densities, and avoid relying on claimed performance until the group has been tested under local conditions. Buyers may want to ask about parent stock, sex-reversal practices, disease history, and whether fish were mixed with other Oreochromis species. For breeding, separating age classes and keeping basic spawn records helps stabilize the group. Never release surplus fish into public waters.
