Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain of Nile tilapia is a record for Oreochromis niloticus stock that has not been assigned to a named culture line such as GIFT, Chitralada, Abbassa, or a documented local strain. These fish may be ordinary gray-green Nile tilapia, red or gold selected stock, or mixed farm populations whose history was never kept separately. The label is useful because tilapia lines can differ in growth, body depth, salinity tolerance, age at maturity, and color, even when they are all the same species.
Farms, research facilities, and hobby aquaponics systems keep unclassified Nile tilapia much like other warm-water tilapia: clean, well-oxygenated water, high-quality omnivorous diets, and protection from cold. Because Nile tilapia breed early and females mouthbrood eggs and fry, harvest planning or sex control can matter in dense systems. Keeping basic source and spawning records helps reduce inbreeding. Local rules on possession, transport, and release should be checked because Nile tilapia can become invasive.
