Mixed Strain
A mixed-strain Nile tilapia is Oreochromis niloticus with ancestry from more than one domesticated, local, or improved aquaculture line. Nile tilapia are warmwater African cichlids now farmed worldwide for food, aquaponics, and research. They grow quickly, tolerate a range of water conditions, and breed as maternal mouthbrooders, with females carrying eggs and fry in the mouth. Mixed strains may include gray, dark, gold, red, mottled, or pale fish depending on the source stock and any color-line history.
In production, mixed strain is a useful but imprecise label. Farmers and researchers pay close attention to growth rate, feed conversion, sex ratio, disease history, temperature tolerance, and whether the fish breed too freely in grow-out tanks or ponds. Regulations are important because Nile tilapia can become invasive outside controlled systems. Good records, biosecurity, warm well-oxygenated water, and a plan for grading or separating sizes matter more than color when choosing stock for a farm, classroom, or aquaponic unit.
