Unknown Variety

Unknown-variety neon tetra is used when the color form or fin type of a Paracheirodon innesi has not been recorded. A fish in this category may be an ordinary wild-type-looking neon, a gold or albino form, a long-fin fish, or a mix that is hard to identify under store lighting. Neon tetras remain small, schooling characins with a blue stripe and red posterior band, though stress can make those colors look washed out.

For owners, the variety name matters less than starting with healthy, active fish that school normally and have clear bodies, intact fins, and no spinal deformity. They do best in settled aquariums with steady temperature, gentle filtration, planted cover, and tankmates too small-mouthed to eat them. If the fish are part of a breeding or display project, photograph them after acclimation and keep notes on any offspring so the line can be described more accurately later.

Colors: Albino, Gold, Long Fin, Wild Type
