Mixed Variety
A mixed-variety neon tetra group contains Paracheirodon innesi from more than one aquarium strain or color form, such as wild-type, albino, gold, or long-fin fish. All are small South American characins with a bright blue lateral stripe and red markings on the rear half of the body, although selective forms may reduce or alter those colors. The term does not indicate a separate species; it simply means the exact variety mix is not being kept or sold as one pure line.
Keepers usually manage them as standard neon tetras: a peaceful school in a mature, stable aquarium with gentle tankmates and small foods. They show better color and confidence in groups, and sudden changes in water quality are a common cause of losses. Breeding projects should separate varieties if consistent offspring are desired, while community tanks can mix forms as long as the fish are healthy and not competing with larger, aggressive species.
