Barnyard Mix
A barnyard mix mulard duck is an informal farm label for a Muscovy duck and mallard-derived domestic duck hybrid whose exact parent stock is not controlled or fully known. Mulards, also called mule ducks, are usually produced from a Muscovy drake and a domestic hen such as Pekin, although backyard flocks may include Rouen, Swedish, Cayuga, or other breeds. These hybrids do not breed true and are generally sterile. Size, carriage, facial skin, and color can vary widely, from black-and-white pied birds to chocolate, blue, barred, or bronze patterns depending on the parents.
Care is closer to heavy domestic duck management than to keeping a pure breed. They need safe night housing, clean water deep enough to wash the head, dry bedding, and a diet that supports steady growth without forcing obesity. Because barnyard parentage is uncertain, buyers should look at leg strength, body condition, temperament, and age rather than relying on a breed name. Eggs, if laid, should not be expected to hatch.
