Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain Mozambique tilapia is Oreochromis mossambicus that has been identified to species but not assigned to a named, selected, or locality-based strain. The fish may come from a local farm population, an aquarium line, a research group, or a wild collection whose original details were not retained. It still carries the familiar traits of the species: a cichlid body shape, maternal mouthbrooding, territorial breeding behavior, and notable tolerance of warm fresh or brackish water.
For aquaculture, laboratory, zoo, or aquaponic use, the unclassified label is a reminder not to assume a known production history. Growth, disease background, and breeding age should be evaluated in the facility where the fish are kept. Any known supplier, collection site, or crossing history is worth recording before the information is lost. Secure tanks, screened drains, and legal compliance are especially important because Mozambique tilapia have established feral populations in many warm regions.
