Mixed Strain
A mixed strain Mozambique tilapia is Oreochromis mossambicus stock made from more than one lineage or from broodfish whose family history has been combined over time. Mozambique tilapia are mouthbrooding cichlids native to southeastern Africa and widely moved for aquaculture, research, aquaponics, and ornamental use. They tolerate warm water, variable salinity, and low-oxygen conditions better than many farmed fish. A mixed strain may include normal dark or gray fish as well as gold, albino, mottled, melanistic, or other color forms.
In hatcheries and ponds, mixed strain fish can be useful, but their performance is harder to predict than that of a documented line. Growth rate, age at maturity, body shape, salinity tolerance, and reproductive output may vary within the same batch. Managers usually keep source records, separate broodstock groups when possible, and avoid presenting mixed fish as a selected or conservation strain. Because Mozambique tilapia can become invasive and may hybridize with other tilapias, secure containment and attention to local rules are part of responsible culture.
