Mountain Lion

Puma concolor

The mountain lion, Puma concolor, is a large solitary cat known by many regional names, including cougar, puma, panther, and catamount. It has a plain tawny coat, long tail, powerful hindquarters, and a range that stretches from Canada through much of the Americas. Adaptability is one reason the species appears in deserts, forests, mountains, grasslands, and brush country, where it hunts deer and other mammals by stalking and ambush.

People usually manage mountain lions through wildlife agencies, sanctuaries, zoos, and conflict-response programs rather than private ownership. Captive cats need secure roofed enclosures, distance from the public, climbing and hiding options, and enrichment that respects their strength and caution. Field management may include livestock protection advice, trail-camera surveys, rehabilitation decisions for orphaned kittens, and clear rules around human encounters. Laws vary, but casual ownership is widely restricted for good reason.
