Mountain Goat

Oreamnos americanus

The mountain goat, scientifically known as Oreamnos americanus, is a rugged and tenacious mammal native to the steep, rocky landscapes of North America's mountainous regions, particularly the Rockies and Cascades. Distinguished by its dense, woolly white coat that provides insulation against harsh alpine climates, the mountain goat is well-adapted to its high-altitude habitat. Both males (billies) and females (nannies) possess sharp, backward-curving black horns that are used for defense and establishing dominance within social hierarchies.

With a stocky build and muscular frame, mountain goats are agile climbers capable of traversing sheer cliffs with ease, thanks to specialized hoof pads that offer excellent traction. Standing about 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing between 100 to 300 pounds, they are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, herbs, lichens, and shrubs found in their challenging environment. Mountain goats are often solitary or found in small groups, with nannies leading the social structure, especially during birthing and raising young kids in the spring. Adapted to some of the harshest terrains, these animals are emblematic of strength and perseverance in the wild.
