Military Macaw

Ara militaris

The military macaw, Ara militaris, is a large green macaw with a red forehead, blue flight feathers, a long tapered tail, and a bare facial patch crossed by fine feather lines. Wild populations occur in scattered mountain forests, dry forests, and canyon country from Mexico into parts of South America. The name comes from the green plumage, which reminded earlier observers of military uniforms, not from any working role.

Keeping military macaws is a long-term aviculture commitment. They need large flight space, serious noise tolerance from the household or facility, strong enrichment, and a diet built around varied produce, formulated feed, nuts, and browse rather than seed alone. Breeding programs should manage pair compatibility and documentation carefully, because legal trade status, conservation concern, and the bird's long lifespan make provenance and responsible placement central to good stewardship.
