Crossbred

Crossbred military macaws are macaws with Ara militaris ancestry crossed with another macaw species, usually within managed aviculture rather than as a recognized breed. The military macaw is a large green macaw with a red forehead, pale facial skin lined with fine dark feather tracks, blue flight feathers, and a long tapered tail. It occurs in parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America, with wild populations affected by habitat loss and trapping. Hybrids may inherit the military macaw's green base color while showing altered face, head, or tail colors from the other parent.

Keeping any military macaw cross requires macaw-level space, noise tolerance, and long-term planning. These birds need large reinforced cages or aviaries, extensive chewing material, and daily interaction that does not encourage overbonding or aggression. Breeding hybrids is controversial where keepers are trying to maintain pure military macaw bloodlines, especially because the wild species is of conservation concern. Buyers should ask clear questions about both parents, permits where required, and whether the bird is being represented as a hybrid or a pure species.
