Mexican Kingsnake
Lampropeltis mexicana
The Mexican kingsnake is an egg-laying snake from central and northeastern Mexico. Adults commonly have dark-edged reddish bands on a gray or tan ground, but natural pattern varies. Specialist hobby collections maintain captive lines. Housing needs secure floor space, concealed retreats, water and a controlled thermal gradient suited to its upland origin. Several snakes formerly treated as its subspecies, including the Durango mountain kingsnake, are now recognized separately.
