Mexican Giant Musk Turtle
Staurotypus triporcatus
The Mexican giant musk turtle is an egg-laying aquatic turtle from Mexico and adjoining Central America. Its brown shell carries three prominent keels, and a large head has powerful jaws. It is maintained by specialist turtle and zoo collections. Housing needs substantial clean water, submerged resting cover, easy land access and nesting space. Its strong bite and adult size require planned husbandry; it is not the same species as the smaller narrow-bridged musk turtle.
