Mexican Blackbelly Garter

The Mexican blackbelly garter snake, Thamnophis melanogaster, is a semi-aquatic garter snake from central Mexican wetlands, lakes, and marshy channels. Its dark belly gives the species its common name, while the upper body is usually patterned in muted browns, olives, or grays with striping that helps it disappear along reeds and muddy edges. It feeds largely around water, taking fish, tadpoles, frogs, and other small wetland prey.

For keepers, this is not the same proposition as a common pet-store garter snake. It needs reliable water quality, escape-proof housing, dry haul-out areas, and temperature choices that reflect its native conditions rather than constant tropical heat. Breeding projects should track locality and lineage carefully, because Mexican wetland garters face habitat pressure and because different Thamnophis forms can be confused when names are used loosely in trade or collections.
