Mexican Beaded Lizard

Heloderma horridum

The Mexican beaded lizard inhabits seasonally dry woodland in western Mexico. Raised beadlike scales, black and yellow markings and a thick fat-storing tail give it a distinctive appearance. It is maintained in zoos and specialist collections, where secure accommodation and professional handling are essential.

It retreats into burrows and eats animal foods, including eggs and nestlings. Females lay eggs. Its bite delivers medically significant venom and requires urgent medical care. International trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.

Colors: Wild Type
