Mealy Amazon

Amazona farinosa

The Mealy Amazon, scientifically known as Amazona farinosa, is one of the largest and most robust parrots in the Amazon genus, renowned for its vibrant and engaging presence. This vibrant bird measures approximately 38 to 41 centimeters in length, with a predominantly rich green plumage that is distinctively tinged with a "mealy" or "dusty" appearance caused by the pale gray edging on its feathers. The Mealy Amazon's wing feathers boast flashes of vibrant red and blue, adding to its striking appearance during flight.

Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, this parrot can be found from southern Mexico through the Amazon Basin to parts of Bolivia and Brazil. The Mealy Amazon inhabits a variety of environments, including lowland rainforests, humid forests, and riverine woodlands, where it thrives on a diverse diet of fruits, seeds, nuts, and berries.

Known for its social nature, the Mealy Amazon often forms noisy flocks, displaying remarkable social bonds. Although not as vocally inclined as other Amazona species, they are capable of mimicking human speech and sounds, reflecting their intelligence and adaptability. Due to habitat loss and pet trade pressures, the Mealy Amazon faces threats in the wild, leading to conservation measures aimed at protecting this charismatic and ecologically significant bird.
