Mangrove Monitor
Varanus indicus
The mangrove monitor, as currently defined, occurs on central Moluccan islands including Ambon, Seram and Buru. Its dark body has yellow spots arranged in transverse bands and a distinct yellow stripe behind the eye. It has appeared in the reptile trade under both this name and the former name Varanus cerambonensis.
Captive monitor housing needs a broad choice of temperatures, including a basking site and cooler retreats. Females lay eggs. Older accounts cover a wider species complex; international trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
