Unknown Breed
When a long-tailed finch is listed as unknown breed, the variety, mutation, or breeding history was not recorded. Long-tailed finches, Poephila acuticauda, are small Australian estrildid finches with a black throat patch, tidy grey to fawn body tones, and a noticeably extended tail. Captive birds are often described by color terms such as normal grey, fawn, pied, or white-rumped, but an unknown-breed bird may simply have arrived through a pet shop, rescue, or mixed aviary without reliable background.
Management should be based on the individual bird rather than assumptions about the label. Check age, condition, bill and feather quality, and compatibility before adding it to a flock, and quarantine new arrivals away from established finches. For breeding, unknown lineage makes color outcomes and relatedness harder to judge, so careful pairing and honest notes matter. Flight space and low-stress social housing are central; a finch seed base can be supplemented with greens and calcium or mineral access.
