Lilac-Crowned Amazon

Amazona finschi

The Lilac-Crowned Amazon, scientifically known as Amazona finschi, is a vibrant parrot species native to the Pacific slopes of Mexico. Recognizable by its striking plumage, this medium-sized parrot features a bright green body, accentuated by a purple-lilac crown that gives it its name. The contrasting hues of red at the forehead and a subtle blue tint beneath the crown add to its visual appeal. Adult Lilac-Crowned Amazons typically measure around 33-35 centimeters in length and weigh between 310-480 grams.

These parrots inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, and semi-arid regions, often preferring altitudes between 600 and 2000 meters. Known for their social behavior, they often form small flocks, which can sometimes be quite vocal, characterized by loud and harsh calls. Their diet primarily consists of fruits, seeds, nuts, and berries, which they forage both in trees and on the ground.

The species faces threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, leading to a declining population, and it is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their natural habitats and to curb illegal capture and trade. These intelligent and engaging birds are known for their charismatic personalities, making them highly sought after in aviculture despite the challenges they face in the wild.
