Lace Monitor
Varanus varius
The lace monitor inhabits forests and woodland in eastern Australia, climbing trees for shelter and foraging on the ground. Adults are dark gray with cream or yellow bands and spots, long strong claws and a long tail. It is maintained in zoos and experienced monitor collections.
Its large size and climbing habits demand substantial secure housing with sturdy elevated retreats and basking opportunities. It eats varied animal prey and carrion. Females lay eggs, often in termite mounds. Bell's phase is a natural banded color pattern within this species.
