Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a placeholder label for a king quail whose variety, color line, or breeding background has not been identified. The bird is still a king quail, also known as Chinese painted quail, with the same small size, ground-foraging habits, and quick, low flight response seen in the species. Unknown birds may be ordinary wild-type, a recognized color mutation, or a mix of several captive lines.
This label is useful when a rescue, aviary, classroom, or hobby flock receives birds without reliable history. Management should begin with species-level care: fine game-bird or quail feed, safe footing, shallow water, hiding cover, and housing that prevents escapes through small gaps. Breeding unknown birds is possible, but offspring should not be sold as a named variety unless the keeper can identify and document the color genetics with confidence.
