Kellen's Dormouse

Graphiurus kelleni

Kellen's dormouse (Graphiurus kelleni) is a small African dormouse of woodland, savanna, and forest-edge habitats. Like other members of the genus Graphiurus, it is nocturnal, agile, and tree-oriented, with large dark eyes, rounded ears, soft gray-brown fur, and a bushy tail used for balance while climbing. It shelters in tree cavities, tangles, and other hidden nest sites, feeding on a mixed diet that can include seeds, fruit, insects, and other small invertebrates.

This species is rarely identified with confidence in the pet trade, where animals may be sold under broad labels such as African dormouse. Captive care information is therefore limited and should be approached conservatively. A secure enclosure with fine mesh, branches, nest boxes, and escape-proof doors matters more than floor space alone. These quick rodents are best observed rather than handled, and temperatures that drop too low may trigger torpor. Anyone acquiring one should confirm legal sourcing and avoid taking animals from the wild.
