Japanese Rat Snake
Elaphe climacophora
The Japanese rat snake is an egg-laying snake native to Japan and nearby islands. Wild adults are often olive, gray-green or brown with subdued longitudinal markings and a pale underside. It uses vegetation and ground cover and is established in specialist collections. Housing needs secure floor space, sturdy climbing routes, retreats, water and a controlled thermal gradient. Natural color variation should not be confused with the distinct species Elaphe quadrivirgata.
