Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a practical label for Japanese quail whose strain, size selection, or color background was not supplied. The bird may be a standard coturnix, a jumbo cross, a color variety, or a mixed flock descendant, but the label means those claims cannot be verified. In quail listings and rescues, unknown breed is often more accurate than guessing from feather color, because many domestic colors occur in both small and large production lines.
Care should follow normal Japanese quail husbandry while the birds are assessed. Give secure ground-level housing, clean water, a game-bird ration suited to age, and enough space to reduce bullying. Adult weight, egg size, laying frequency, fertility, and temperament will tell more than a name after several weeks. If breeding or rehoming unknown-breed quail, describe observable traits and avoid promising jumbo size, pure color genetics, or predictable offspring unless records support it.
