Inland Taipan
Oxyuranus microlepidotus
The inland taipan is an egg-laying Australian elapid associated with inland plains and cracking soils. Adults range from pale brown to dark olive, with a darker head and seasonal variation in color. It is maintained in specialist zoological collections requiring secure containment, retreats and trained management. Housing needs a controlled thermal gradient matched to its inland origin. Its venom can cause life-threatening illness, and native-wildlife and dangerous-animal permits can apply.
