Hispaniolan Boa
Chilabothrus striatus
The Hispaniolan boa, also called the Haitian boa, is a live-bearing boa found only on Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and on a few of its offshore islands such as Gonâve, Saona and Tortuga. It lives in dry to moist forest and scrub from sea level into the mountains, and it is often found near farms and villages. Adults are slender and partly arboreal, commonly 4 to 6 feet long, with a gray, tan or brown ground color and dark blotches. Some animals, mostly from the eastern part of the island, are red or reddish brown and are sold as Dominican red mountain boas.
Captive Hispaniolan boas need secure climbing branches, several hides and a warm-to-cool temperature gradient. Young snakes often prefer lizards before they take rodents, so keep feeding history with each animal, along with locality and lineage when you know them.
