Eastern

Eastern Hermann's tortoise usually refers to the eastern form of Testudo hermanni, commonly associated with the Balkans, Greece, and nearby parts of southeastern Europe and western Asia. Compared with the western form, eastern animals are often larger and more variable in shell pattern, with yellow, olive, brown, and black markings that may be less sharply defined. Locality and bloodline can still affect adult size and appearance.

Keepers value eastern Hermann's tortoises because they are active, hardy Mediterranean tortoises when their husbandry is set up correctly. They need strong ultraviolet light, a dry basking area, a varied high-fiber plant diet, and outdoor time in secure climates or seasons. Breeding animals should be identified by source and, when possible, locality, since mixing eastern, western, and uncertain tortoises can blur conservation and studbook value even if the pets remain healthy.

Colors: Dalmatian, Dark Phase, High Yellow, Normal/Wild Type
