Helmethead Gecko
Tarentola chazaliae
The helmethead gecko is a nocturnal lizard of the Atlantic coastal deserts of northwestern Africa. A broad, rounded head, raised scales and a sandy brown pattern give it a distinctive profile. Captive-bred animals are kept by desert-gecko specialists. A ventilated enclosure uses a dry sandy substrate, secure hides, a warm area and cooler retreats, with access to moisture and small insect food.
Females lay hard-shelled eggs. It was formerly placed in the genus Geckonia and should not be confused with larger wall-dwelling Tarentola species.
