Helmeted Turtle
Pelomedusa subrufa
The helmeted turtle is an egg-laying African freshwater side-neck turtle. It has a low oval brown shell and a broad head, and folds its neck sideways beneath the shell edge. Specialist hobby and zoo collections maintain it. Housing needs clean water, easy access to sheltered land, basking and nesting space. Recent revisions split several species formerly called Pelomedusa subrufa, so this row represents the southern African species rather than every African helmeted turtle.
