Amazona viridigenalis

The Green-Cheeked Amazon, scientifically known as Amazona viridigenalis, is a vibrant and active parrot native to northeastern Mexico. This medium-sized bird measures around 33 centimeters (13 inches) in length and is renowned for its striking plumage. As its name suggests, the Green-Cheeked Amazon showcases a vivid green body with a distinctive patch of bright red on its forehead, which is bordered by bluish tones. This striking coloration makes it a favorite among bird enthusiasts.

Known for its playful nature and intelligence, the Green-Cheeked Amazon is a highly social bird often found in flocks, especially during the non-breeding season. In the wild, their diet consists mainly of fruits, seeds, nuts, and berries, which they skillfully forage in their subtropical lowland forest habitats.

Unfortunately, the Green-Cheeked Amazon faces threats from habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade, leading to its classification as Endangered by the IUCN. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species by preserving its natural habitat and curbing illegal trapping. In captivity, these parrots are known for their affectionate behavior and ability to mimic human speech, making them popular yet challenging pets due to their need for mental stimulation and social interaction.
