Green Basilisk
Basiliscus plumifrons
The green basilisk is an egg-laying lizard of Central American rainforests near water. Adult males are vivid green with pale or blue spots and conspicuous crests on the head, back and tail; females have reduced crests. Zoos and experienced hobby keepers provide substantial climbing cover, access to clean water, dry basking space and controlled tropical conditions.
Smithsonian keepers feed insects and earthworms. Females bury their eggs. Its water-running behavior and multiple adult male crests distinguish it from the brown basilisk.
