Goniurosaurus orientalis
Goniurosaurus orientalis
Goniurosaurus orientalis is a nocturnal, egg-laying ground gecko from islands in Japan's Ryukyu chain. Dark skin crossed by pale bands, large eyes with vertical pupils and clawed toes without broad adhesive pads distinguish it from climbing geckos. Specialist breeders provide humid ground-level shelter, stable rocks and logs, cover, small insects and carefully controlled temperatures that avoid excessive heat.
It is often called a Japanese cave gecko, a label also applied to related species. Scientific identity and captive lineage therefore provide clearer records.
