Gidgee Spiny-Tailed Skink
Egernia stokesii
The gidgee spiny-tailed skink is a live-bearing Australian skink of rocky outcrops and sheltered timber in dry country. Heavy keeled scales, a short spiny tail and a stout brown body identify it. Zoos and hobby breeders provide stable crevices, basking surfaces, a controlled temperature gradient and both plant and animal foods.
Wild family associations and long pair bonds are documented, but captive group compatibility still needs close attention. Unlike egg-laying skinks, females produce developed young, so breeding records should use live birth.
