Unknown Strain
An unknown strain giant tiger prawn is a Penaeus monodon entry where the exact hatchery line, wild source, or selected breeding background has not been identified. Giant tiger prawns are large tropical marine shrimp with dark banding and strong commercial value in aquaculture. Strain can matter because growth rate, disease history, salinity tolerance, and broodstock origin may differ between wild, domesticated, and selectively bred lines. The unknown label is therefore a practical record status, not a biological variety.
Aquaculture managers should treat unknown-strain prawns cautiously when comparing production results or planning breeding. Biosecurity, health screening, water quality, stocking density, and traceability become especially important when lineage is unclear. These animals can still be useful for grow-out or observation, but they are less informative for a selective breeding program unless later records clarify their source. Farms, hatcheries, and researchers benefit from separating unknown material from named lines so survival, feed conversion, and disease events are not misattributed.
