Giant African Land Snail

Achatina fulica

The Giant African Land Snail (Achatina fulica) is one of the largest terrestrial gastropods, renowned for its impressive size and voracious appetite. Native to East Africa, this species has a distinctively conical, spiraled shell that can grow up to 20 cm in length and 13 cm in diameter. The shell is typically a rich brown with lighter bands, though coloration can vary. The snail's soft, elongated body is a pale, grayish color, equipped with two sets of tentacles: the upper pair houses the eyes, while the lower pair helps in sensory perception.

Achatina fulica is hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs, which contributes to its rapid proliferation and adaptability in diverse environments. While it thrives in tropical climates, it has become an invasive species in many regions across Asia, the Americas, and the Caribbean due to its ability to consume a wide variety of plant materials, posing a serious threat to agriculture and native ecosystems.

This terrestrial snail is primarily nocturnal, staying hidden during the day to conserve moisture. In captivity, they are often kept as unique pets, requiring a diet rich in calcium to maintain their robust shells. Despite their beautiful appearance, their invasive nature and potential to transmit diseases like rat lungworm in some areas require careful management and control to prevent ecological disturbances.
