Mixed Breed
Mixed breed Gambel's quail is an informal label for captive quail whose exact parentage is blended, undocumented, or outside a pure Gambel's quail line. Gambel's quail, Callipepla gambelii, are small desert quail from the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, recognized by the male's chestnut cap, black face and belly patch, scaled body pattern, and comma-shaped topknot. Mixed birds may retain many of these traits while showing atypical color, pattern, or body type.
For keepers, the label is most useful as a management warning rather than a selling point. Mixed birds should not be released or used for projects that require native genetics. In an aviary they are managed like other Gambel's quail: low-stress groups, shelter from wet cold, sandy flooring or dry litter, and plenty of visual cover to reduce chasing. Local rules may apply because Gambel's quail are native game birds in parts of their range.
