Gaboon Adder
Bitis gabonica
The Gaboon adder is a live-bearing African forest viper with a very heavy body, broad head and intricate brown, cream and dark leaf-like markings. Small nasal projections are less developed than in the western Gaboon viper. It is kept in specialist zoological collections requiring secure retreats and controlled forest conditions. Its venom is medically significant and dangerous-animal permits can apply. Bitis rhinoceros is treated as a separate species.
