Florida Softshell Turtle
Apalone ferox
The Florida softshell turtle is an egg-laying aquatic turtle of the southeastern United States. Its broad leathery shell lacks hard scutes, and a long neck ends in a tubular snout; adults become darker and more mottled than the brightly marked young. It is maintained by specialist turtle collections. Housing needs substantial clean water, smooth safe surfaces, resting cover, basking access and nesting land. Adult size requires planning, especially for females.
