Fennec Fox
Vulpes zerda
The fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) is the small desert fox of North Africa and the Sahara, recognized by its oversized ears, pale coat, compact body, and quick, light-footed movement. The ears help shed heat and locate prey under sand, while fur on the feet gives protection on hot surfaces. In the wild it uses burrows and feeds on insects, small vertebrates, eggs, fruit, and other foods available in dry landscapes.
Fennec foxes appear in the exotic pet trade, but they are not domestic dogs in miniature. Laws vary widely, and responsible care requires secure dig-proof housing, warm dry areas, privacy, enrichment, and a diet planned with veterinary input rather than casual table food. They can be noisy at night, fast to escape, and difficult to house-train. Zoos manage them in pairs or small social groups with sand or soil for digging, shaded retreats, and careful monitoring of heat, teeth, weight, and stress.
