Unknown Breed
Unknown breed European bison usually means the animal's ancestry, registry status, or line has not been documented. For Bison bonasus, the word breed can be misleading, because conservation programs focus on verified wisent parentage rather than named breeds. An undocumented animal may be pure, hybrid, or misidentified, especially in regions where American bison or bison-cattle crosses are also kept. The natural wisent is a large brown forest-edge bovid with a deep chest, beard, and strong herd instincts.
Before breeding or transferring an animal as pure European bison, zoos, sanctuaries, and private holders usually try to resolve the unknown status. Source records, permanent identification, photographs, veterinary files, and genetic testing where available can all be useful. Until status is resolved, management should err on the side of caution: keep it separate from registered conservation herds, use bison-grade fencing and handling systems, provide roughage-based feed, and plan for safe social grouping.
