Mixed Breed
Mixed breed European bison is an informal description for an animal whose ancestry is not limited to verified Bison bonasus, or whose herd background combines different undocumented sources. European bison, known as wisent, are not normally divided into pet-style breeds; conservation herds track founder lines and parentage. A mixed animal may look like a typical dark-brown wisent, with high shoulders and a short-horned head, yet still carry American bison or cattle influence.
Care and management should treat it as a powerful bison-type animal, regardless of how tame it appears. Mixed animals need secure pasture, heavy fencing, safe feeding access, and handling equipment designed to keep people out of direct contact. They are generally unsuitable for reintroduction or breeding into registered wisent herds unless ancestry is resolved. For sanctuaries and private holders, honest labeling prevents confusion when animals are transferred, grouped, or used in public interpretation.
