Eurasian Sparrowhawk

Accipiter nisus

The Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) is a small bird of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae, common across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa. This agile and stealthy raptor is recognized for its remarkable hunting skills, often seen navigating through dense woodlands or suburban areas. Adult males sport slate-grey plumage on their backs, with orange-barred undersides and striking red eyes, while females and juveniles are generally larger and display brown and white streaked plumage, providing excellent camouflage among the trees.

With a wingspan ranging from 55 to 70 cm, its broad, rounded wings and long tail facilitate nimble flights and quick twists to catch its primary prey: small birds. The Eurasian Sparrowhawk's adaptability to various habitats, including cities and gardens, has allowed it to maintain a stable population, despite historical declines due to pesticide use and persecution. Known for its secretive nature, this bird is often observed only as a swift shadow darting through thickets, and it plays a crucial role in controlling the populations of small bird species in its ecosystem.
